We found something TRULY out of the ordinary!

This isn’t just rare - it’s historic.

@antiguan has been posting sightings around Antigua for the last few months, which has had Captain George keeping his eyes peeled to avoid any boat strikes (and point out to our guests!).

Manatees once lived throughout the eastern Caribbean, including these islands. For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples hunted them for food, oil, and tools. Combined later with habitat loss during colonization, manatees were gradually wiped out from this region, disappearing from places like Antigua centuries ago.

Which is why sightings here today are so extraordinary.

Their presence raises so many questions: changing currents, warming waters, recovering ecosystems… or simply nature reminding us it’s still full of surprises!?

To witness one here feels like seeing a ghost of the past; or maybe a quiet sign of what could return.

A little dash of magic and hope in a world that really needs it.
