That golden-brown seaweed you’re seeing is Sargass

That golden-brown seaweed you’re seeing is Sargassum seaweed, a natural part of the ocean ecosystem that usually floats far offshore in places like the Sargasso Sea.

Sargassum actually plays an important role in the ocean; it provides shelter and food for small marine life, including fish, crabs, and even sea turtle hatchlings, helping them survive in open water.

But in recent years, larger blooms have been drifting into the Caribbean (including Antigua and Barbuda) due to warmer waters and changing ocean conditions.

When it reaches shore, it can:

Collect along beaches

Create a strong smell as it breaks down 😬

Affect nearshore water clarity

But here’s what most people don’t realize…

👉 It mainly impacts the eastern (Atlantic-facing) coast

👉 The west coast is clear the majority of the time thanks to wind + current patterns

That’s exactly why our charters stay mainly on the west and sheltered coasts - so you still get those clear, turquoise waters, calmer conditions, and beautiful beach stops.

So yes, sargassum is part of the story…

he bespoked the tour to our needs. My son and his girl friend really wanted to snorkel a ship wreck, 🛳️ I’m a newbie to snorkelling 🤿 so was really pleased with myself 🥳
We really saw the most amazing under water 🐠🐠 🐢 George is very knowledgable about the island and spotting turtles 🐢 And such a friendly guy,
On our first scuba he spotted a stingray straight away it really is a amazing feeling being in the sea seeing such wonderful sights

Yesterday evening, two families were enjoying the

Yesterday evening, two families were enjoying the beach at Prickly Pear Island when in the distance they noticed some massive splashing.

Everyone grabbed everything and RAN to the boat. Not too long after, they were treated to a very special encounter - a mama Humpback Whale and her calf, casually cruising along the surface of the water.

A new core memory for everyone on board!! 🐋💦
